Steering wheel upgrade

The DASS Speed wheel replaces the stock steering wheel on your transmitter (pistol-grip radio). Around the world the same family of wheels is often listed under the DAS Speed Ultimate name (part DAS-0001) from the Vitamin Z / DAS Speed ecosystem — Swiss-designed hardware that has become a familiar sight on drivers’ stands from Mini-Z nights up to 1:10 touring and drift. The Aussie Edition you buy here is the green and gold finish we worked on with DASS Speed for Australia; an all-grey wheel is on the way — the gallery below includes preview shots of that finish — ask the club if you want to be notified.

It is not limited to Kyosho radios: if your pistol-grip controller takes a compatible wheel, it sits in the same “most controllers we see at the track” bucket as Sanwa, Futaba, KO Propo, Flysky, and plenty of others.

Why the rim feels different

Independent retailers and distributors describe the production DAS-0001 rim as a rigid composite wheel with a micro-textured outer surface — marketing language often compares it to spider- or hair-inspired hooks that bite into your skin without needing a death-grip. In practice, many drivers report the same thing in plain English: the rubbery outer sticks with very little finger pressure, almost like Christmas beetle legs or fine spider legs dragging on glass — uncanny grip that lets you steer with a lighter touch and still feel locked in when the car gets nervous.

That “sticky but not foam” character is exactly why people chase these wheels for long mains: you are not constantly re-clamping to recover from slip, and fine corrections feel immediate rather than mushy.

Note: We are summarising widely repeated retailer and forum language (e.g. Kenon Hobby, One28, Racing Modélisme, RSRC) — not an independent lab test. If your hands are sensitive to texture, try a friend’s wheel before you buy.

Size, weight, and “why ~44 mm”

Listings for the DAS Speed Ultimate / DAS-0001 family commonly quote an outer diameter of about 44 mm — deliberately smaller than many stock foam or plastic wheels so the rim travels less arc per degree of steering. The idea is faster, more precise end‑to‑end inputs with less hand movement, which suits small‑throw indoor lines as much as it does big touring layouts.

Exact measurements can vary slightly by batch and how shops measure; treat 44 mm as the design intent, not a caliper challenge.

Compatibility (check your manual)

Direct-fit combinations repeatedly called out in distributor copy include:

  • Sanwa — MT4, MT4S, MT44, M17, M17S (and similar wheel-splined radios in those families)
  • Flysky — NB4 Pro, NB4+, NB4 Pro+
  • KO Propo — typically with the hex adapter included or offered alongside the wheel

Optional adapters are commonly listed for Futaba, Sanwa M12, early NB4 V1, and other radios — availability depends on the importer. If you are unsure about spline or set-screw fitment, ask us or your local hobby shop before opening the packet.

In the box

  • One DASS Speed Wheel (green / gold Aussie Edition)
  • No printed fitting sheet — use your transmitter’s manual for wheel removal / spline notes, or ask the club before you start.
  • Compatibility reminder: confirm your transmitter family against the list above; we cannot honour returns where the wheel does not fit a non‑listed radio you assumed would work.
